There were several discussions on the proper use of dialog at the SFWC this year. Many new authors struggle with it. I will be sure to put this on my editing checklist! Good advice.

The vast majority of writers make errors when punctuating the dialog in their novels.  Many writers who make these errors think they have a firm grasp on dialog punctuation.

Though it probably won’t get you rejected by an agent or editor, incorrect punctuation can put them in a very nasty mood (the last thing you want when they’re handling your precious novel).

Commas

Commas are always used with dialog tags, whether they come before or after the dialog.  For example:

“Look at the dog,” he said. [RIGHT]

He said, “Look at the dog.” [RIGHT]

“Look at the dog.” He said.  [WRONG]

He said. “Look at the dog.” [WRONG]

If an exclamation point or question mark is used and the dialog tag comes after the dialog, then there should be no comma and the dialog tag should not be capitalized.  For example:

“Did you see the dog?” he asked. [RIGHT]

“Did…

Bringing Justice in Romance Writing?

I’ve written Sci Fi, read Sci Fi/Fantasy, watched all the Sci Fi shows…etc. So now I find myself writing something new, a romance. Did you know that there are rules? New to me but, far be it that I should not comply.

My protagonists are moving along just fine and are the main story line. My female enters the story in a setting new to her. She arrives as she is fleeing a stalker abusive ex-boyfriend. He isn’t the main story but I have been advised that since I introduced him as a secondary but strong story line, I must bring justice to his ways.

I think killing him works just fine for me, but that may be my own baggage and not the best for the story. (and no, I didn’t kill my stalker, didn’t even try, I did move three counties away though)

Big Al thinks the Sherriff should not be the avenger but the town homeless vet. Hmmmm, suffering from PTSD and the stalker does the wrong thing at the wrong time???? What could this be that would not screw the vet?

My beloved had a bad case of PTSD when we first married, hit the floor when the phone rings folks! (Changed that ring tone fast.) So glad it diminished every year, I have a friend who lives with fear every day, but she loves him. She has gotten good at predicting the unpredictable. She gets the sacrifice her husband made defending liberty. I get her sacrifice.

So what do you think, should this act of justice be carried out by the homeless vet? And what about justice for the vet? I think it would be picking on him, having trouble with this whole justice thing. With Sci Fi, I could just suck him out a vent into space, much easier….

Crafty People — Festival Season has Officially Begun!

I managed to get out of the San Mateo Festival for under $200.00, a miracle as they had so much to offer. I particularly drooled after a Koala Cabinet that was 6″ higher (I’m tall) and a desk that folds down a full size bed without having to clear everything off the desk! The colors were amazing, so much food for the imagination.

Stitches West was a little disappointing. My preconceived notions didn’t match up. The Santa Clara Convention Center is a great venue and was filled with more yarn than I’ve seen in one place. But the bargains were just not there. I did manage to find two and enjoyed the tactile touching of the fibers. I was prepared to spend quite a bit to supply Sarah Mochini with raw materials but came home with only 650 grams of fibers. We’ve just gotten good at finding bargains elsewhere!
Soaked up experiences, sights and sounds to enrich my writing. Stitches West definitely had some colorful characters walking around, even some of the vendors were colorful, one gentleman just might make it in a story down the road.

The best part of the two trips? Spending time with my best friend, I am blessed to have her in my life!

No time to write today….

I’m taking off work and going to the Bay Area Quilt, Craft & Sewing Festival at the San Mateo County Event Center, (1346 Saratoga Drive, San Mateo).

The colors, the art, the ambiance and my wonderful friend, Dian.  Should be a great afternoon of just letting the stress fall away and enjoying the day with someone who loves me.  The sun is shining and bonus day was yesterday.  What the tax man left, I’m off to spend!

Enjoy your day and tell someone you love them, hug someone just because!

Lavender Smiles

I ordered some Lavender from the SF Herb Company, food grade, thinking it would come from a local Lavender farm, Napa or Dixon, since they are so close.  What I received was an extremely high quality product from France.  The quality was so high, I was pleased.  I popped an ounce into some organza bags and took three with me on my travels last night.  Caitlyn made my night!  The joy and wonder of a small child experiencing something for the first time!  She smiled, her eyes twinkled with wonder as she sniffed again and again.  When I explained they were flower buds (she was looking for the flower stems, LOL) she tried to pick one through the organza.  All the while clutching it in her hand and sniffing away.  It’s the simple things in life that are the best.  No one could have paid for the creation of this genuine emotion through the eyes of a child.  God Bless and Keep Caitlyn, may she only have her heart bruised and never broken and her joy be full all her days!

An Undelivered Letter – To My Loved One

Kay has expressed my grief so well, some days are good, some days are bad. I push on because my beloved always wanted the best for me. He believed in me more than any other, he loved me and my rambling stories. I thank God for the time He gave me to be with my beloved. I now understand something of what God must have felt when separated from Christ for the first and only time. They await for me, my treasures. For now, I will be the person worthy of being called his beloved.

To you,

I don’t know whether to feel relieved, sad, or guilty.  Right now, I feel a little of all three.  But mostly guilty.  I was dreading the day, watching the calendar as it crept up.  But then I got so caught up that it came and went and I hardly noticed.  I didn’t even realize until just now that I had missed it. And now I battle this gang of emotions and the only thing I knew to do was this: to write it out.  To write it to you.

Browsing through the Slush Pile – Hugh Jackman

Well because it’s Hugh Jackman, do you have to ask.

If you don’t have time to watch the whole video, which I recommend, try the last few minutes around 26:30. Pure gold on relationships!

Information Overload

Wow!  Another great year at the San Francisco Writers Conference.  I was very tired, in information overload and almost did not go to dinner with the last stragglers.  We numbered eight and dined at Cafe LaPresse on the corner of Grant Street and Bush Streets in SFO.  The conversation was priceless as we shared details on our latest projects, digital covers and more.  Do Michael Larsen and Harvey Pawl ever run out of energy? The food and wine were wonderful topped off with Grand Marnier Creme Brulee, Yum!

So sad that I have to wait until next year to do it again, until then, keep writing 🙂
